Storms
Cyclones are huge rotating storms which spiral about a low pressure centre. Those that form in the tropics may also be called hurricanes, typhoons, tropical storms, and tropical depressions, depending on their size and intensity. The main hazards associated with tropical cyclones are wind gusts and heavy rainfall, but considerable coastal erosion and storm surges can also happen. Community preparedness, engineering solutions and land-use planning can significantly reduce cyclone impacts.
